In my 32 years as a professional engineer, I learned a fundamental truth: if a structure’s foundation is out of alignment with the blueprint, the entire building is compromised. The exact same rule applies to county government.
Lately, there has been a lot of campaign rhetoric, online video reels, and speeches circulating about the role of the County Clerk. Some candidates are using public platforms to discuss issues that have absolutely nothing to do with the actual, legal duties of the Clerk's office. Others are rewriting local history, framing the basic, mandatory requirements of state law as if they were personal achievements.
Let’s look at the actual blueprint—the Missouri Revised Statutes.
Take the Board of Equalization (BOE), which processes your property assessment appeals. By state law, the County Clerk is the mandatory, automatic Secretary of this board. It is a strict statutory obligation designed to ensure an independent check and balance for the taxpayer.
Yet, in recent years, a previous administration allowed the structural integrity of this process to fail by letting the Assessor’s office take over the operations of the BOE. When the current administration finally returned those duties to the Clerk's office, it wasn't a case of a politician stepping in as a "taxpayer protector" or creating an innovative new partnership. It was simply fixing a past failure and finally following the law.
Conflating basic statutory compliance with political achievement is exactly why voters lose trust in local government.
The County Clerk's office is not a platform for political rhetoric, nor is it a place for administrative guesswork. It is a serious, administrative engine that requires a leader who respects the strict legal boundaries of the office, understands the data, and ensures the county operates strictly by the book from day one.
When you hear our team out on the campaign trail this week, you won't hear empty political theater or bureaucratic excuses. You will get a professional engineer's commitment to transparency, accuracy, and absolute compliance with the law.
Let's bring business logic back to the Platte County courthouse.
